Hang-on-back (HOB) Protein Skimmer Comparison
Let’s take a look at the top 3 hang-on-back (HOB) protein skimmers in the market today (in my opinion).
Why Hang on the back?
Hang-on-the-back skimmers are a good option if you’re looking for an easy option to add in a skimmer without needing additional tanks or sump setups. These types of skimmers will work with almost any fish tank on the market.
Reef Octopus offers the Classic BH2000 Protein skimmer which is good for tanks up to 80 gallons heave load or up to 200 gallons with light bioload. This skimmer measures 10in x 4in x 21in and uses the reliable Aquatrance 2000s pump.
Aquamaxx offers the HOB 1.5 skimmer with a catchy blue body. This skimmer uses the Shark 1.0 pump (a modified Sicce pump) to maximize foam production and protein extraction. This compact design measures 7.5in x 3.5in x 17in. This skimmer can support a 40-gallon tank with a heavy load or up to 100 gallons or more with a light load.
Red Sea Prizm hang-on protein skimmer is a small simple and compact skimmer. The slim 2.4″ wide body allows it to be discretely hung behind the tank. This unit is great for 10-gallon tanks to 100-gallon and offers a smoked color body design to help keep algae from growing inside the body of the skimmer.

You cannot go wrong with either one of these 3 hang-on-the-back skimmers. They are a very popular option when it comes to hand on skimmers.
